01 — On heartwood

Every tree grows a dense, dark core at its center — the part that gave the tree its strength while it was still standing. We frame every sofa, chair, and bed from that core outward, choosing timber for its grain before we ever choose it for its size.

The Process

What holds a piece together

No fastener is asked to do a job a joint could do on its own.

Mortise & Tenon
A tongue cut into one member locks into a socket cut in the other — the backbone joint for tables, beds, and frames.
Tables · Beds
Dovetail
Interlocking wedge-shaped fingers that pull tighter under load rather than working loose. Cut by hand at the bench.
Drawers · Storage
Bridle Joint
An open-ended slot joint that leaves both members visible from the side — used where the joinery is meant to be seen.
Chairs · Stools
Draw-bored Peg
A wooden peg driven through an offset hole, pulling the joint tight without a drop of glue.
Beds · Frames
A woodworker shaping solid timber by hand in the workshop
The Workshop

One shop, every room in the house.

Most furniture makers pick a lane — a chair shop, a bed shop, a sofa house. We kept ours wide on purpose: the same joiners who cut a dovetail for a sideboard also frame the sofa in the next bay.

Lumber is sourced within 300 miles and rests in our loft for a full season before it ever meets a blade.
